St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada

We arrived in St. Johns about 8:00 AM on what promised to be a sunny and warm day.  St. Johns is supposed to have a population of 150,000, but the town looked and felt much smaller.  Since we docked right in town and Adele had suffered from shopping deprivation at our last stop, we decided to just walk around.  The locals were clearly expecting us and many of the stores had "Welcome, Maasdam" signs in the windows.  The town seems to depend a lot on the tourist trade and there were many, many boutiques and souvenir stores trying to get some dollars from us.
The town was colorful, but had the somewhat spare architecture I have noted before in the far northern latitudes.  We walked together for an hour or so and then we split up.  Adele to do some serious shopping and me to find some interesting photo opportunities.  There wasn't a lot for either of us to find, though and we headed back to the ship at about 11:00 AM after only about two hours on shore.
The sail away was quite impressive.  The ship had to thread its way through a very narrow and winding channel to get out to the Atlantic.  At some points it looked like we were going to scrape off a few barnacles, but we made it out to sea and headed for our next port of call.
